Memorable Memorial Day ~ 2004-06-02 posted by chongüey
Memorial Day weekend snuck up on me. In fact, I had no idea I had Monday off until around 3:30 PM on Friday. With the realization that I had a juicy three-day weekend in front of me, I sprung into action.

I called up Steve and Jacob, ex-roommates and occasional camping buddies, and organized a trip to Burrow Wash in the Waterpockets Fold of Capitol Reef. (Another day, another slot canyon.) I had been there before with J.R. several years earlier and enjoyed the hike immensely. However, a few things have changed since my previous trip, namely the water levels. What was once a nice dry hike was now a slog through occasionally chest deep water.

Not that it wasn't fun; It was a lot of fun. But let me tell you that water that has been sitting at the bottom of a two-foot wide rock corridor is not exactly "room temperature". It was more like "refrigerator temperature." The canyon ended abruptly at a spectacular 60 foot high dry waterfall.

In an attempt to bring our body temperatures back to a normal level, we stopped at the hot springs in Meadow on the way back. Sadly, there were no naked lesbians this time.

Where are the photos of this memorable trip? Well, they are few indeed, since I had to stash the camera as we began wadding through the watery passages. The few that I have will be posted shortly, along with the annual "Carlton Gardens" spread.

And now the braying of barnyard animals...
